• Walk through the preserved ruins of Beichuan’s old county town — collapsed buildings, twisted steel, tilted clock towers, everything frozen at 2:28 on that afternoon. Each collapsed wall and pile of rubble stands beside a sign that tells you what once stood here, and the stories of those who were lost.

• Stand beside a school playground where a boulder crashed through, or a government building cut in half by a landslide. And then look up — at the green that has returned to the mountains, at the trees that have grown a storey high out of the rubble. Life finds its way back.

• Drive through the deep mountain valleys, where new roads trace the contours of a landscape that was torn apart and is now slowly being reclaimed by forest and grass
